THROUGHOUT THE COLD WAR, millions of Navy men and women braved the hazards of sea and sky and endured years of service far from home to serve their country in a time of real peril. Thousands of Sailors paid with their lives to ensure that powerful adversaries dared not attack the United States; that other nations would have a chance to survive the onslaught of an ideology that did not respect the most basic human rights; and that the world would be a better place for future generations of Americans.
