The Soviet Navy's modern fleet of more than 300 lethal submarines posed the greatest threat to the U.S. Navy's control of the seas. To counter that threat, the Navy developed advanced surface ships, submarines, patrol aircraft, and ASW (antisubmarine warfare) helicopters. American science and industry aided the effort with specially designed radars, sonars, and sonobuoys.
