Ships of the U.S. fleet made numerous port calls during typical six-month deployments to the Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and other areas of the globe. These visits were meant to show support for allied nations and discourage aggressive behavior by neighboring countries. They also afforded American Sailors much needed rest and recreation after months of arduous sea duty.
