From the beginning of the nation's manned space program, the U.S. Navy played a leading role. Naval aviators were the first Americans to reach space, orbit the globe, and land on the moon. Navy warships and helicopters were on hand to recover astronauts and their space capsules when they "splashed down" in the ocean.
