THE UNITED STATES joined with allies in the worthy effort to protect the Republic of Vietnam and its people from ruthless attack by external and internal Communists, who respected neither human rights nor individual freedom. That American Sailors and Marines were willing to risk and sometimes sacrifice their lives in Vietnam demonstrated to friend and foe, especially the Soviet Union, that the U.S. would fight to defend its core beliefs and global commitments.
