Yankee Station: The Air War

Throughout the war, Navy carriers launched and recovered aircraft in an operating area called Yankee Station at the mouth of Tonkin Gulf. Routinely steaming there, in Task Force 77, were three or four carriers and 30 escorting cruisers, destroyers, and support ships. Aircraft from the carriers dropped 1.5 million tons of bombs on North and South Vietnam.
