How a Nuclear Reactor Works

How a Nuclear Reactor Works

1  The Navy’s pressurized-water reactors include primary and secondary coolant systems. The primary system circulates water—pressurized to keep it from boiling—in a closed loop. As water passes through the reactor, it is heated. It then goes through the steam generator, where its heat produces steam in the secondary system before flowing back to the reactor to be heated again.
